What size should a dining table be?
In short
The ideal dining table size depends on the number of guests and the space available: allow 120 to 140 cm for 4 people, 160 to 180 cm for 6, 200 to 240 cm for 8, and 260 to 300 cm for 10 guests. Also allow for at least 80 cm between the table and the walls or furniture for comfortable circulation. The shape matters too: a rectangular table goes up to over 300 cm for large gatherings, a round one seats 4 people at 100 cm across (6 to 8 people at 140-160 cm), and a square one comes in sizes from 60 to 220 cm per side.
The complete guide to choosing the right dining table size
What size should your dining table be? Choosing the right dimensions is not something to take lightly. A well-sized table is not just about aesthetics — it plays a key role in your everyday comfort and the harmony of your space. Whether you regularly host family meals or dinners with friends, the size of your table directly impacts how enjoyable those moments are and how easily people can move around it. So, how do you make sure your dining table is practical, comfortable, and perfectly suited to your room? This guide will help you choose the ideal size, taking into account your space and the number of guests.
What size dining table should you choose for your space?
Optimizing available space: finding the right balance between flow and comfort
The size of your dining table should прежде everything fit the space you have available. It’s essential to leave enough room around the table to ensure smooth movement. We recommend allowing at least 80 cm of clearance between the table and surrounding walls or furniture. This makes it easy to sit down and stand up, while also creating an open and pleasant atmosphere. Beyond improving circulation, this distance helps prevent the table from feeling either too bulky or too small within the room. In this way, your table size should be proportional to the overall volume of the space to maintain both visual and functional balance.
The importance of room size: how to avoid a table that’s too big or too small
The size of your room is a key factor in the choice of your table’s dimensions. A table that is too large can visually overwhelm the space and make movement difficult, while one that is too small may create an imbalance in your décor and fail to provide enough comfort. It is therefore essential to choose a table based on the size and shape of your room. A rectangular space is better suited to a table of the same shape. On the other hand, a more compact room can accommodate a round or square table, maximizing the available space while maintaining a harmonious atmosphere.
What dining table length should you choose for your guests?
How many people can you seat? Practical examples based on guest count
The length of your dining table mainly depends on how many people you plan to seat on a regular basis. Here are a few examples to help you determine the ideal table length:
- 2 to 4 people: a table around 120 to 140 cm in length is generally sufficient to comfortably seat up to 4 people.
- 4 to 6 people: a table measuring 160 to 180 cm in length will give your guests enough space to enjoy a comfortable meal without feeling cramped.
- 6 to 8 people: for more frequent gatherings, a table measuring 200 to 240 cm in length is recommended.
- 8 to 10 people: if you enjoy hosting larger groups, a table measuring 260 to 300 cm in length will be ideal, giving everyone a seat without compromising on comfort.
Our recommendations help you visualize how many guests your table can accommodate while ensuring enough space for everyone.
Adapting your table to everyday life: do you really need a large table for special occasions?
Before choosing a large table, it's important to think about your everyday use. Do you really need a huge table if you only rarely host lots of guests? Think about the size that best suits your everyday life and your space. For example, if you live as a couple or a small family, it may be more practical to have a table for 4 to 6 people day to day, with the option to add extensions for bigger occasions. This way, you make the most of the space in your dining room, without sacrificing comfort for larger events. For more information, check out our article how to extend your dining table.
In short, it’s essential to choose a table that fits your lifestyle rather than opting for an oversized model for occasional use.
What table size should you choose depending on the tabletop shape?
Rectangular table: the classic choice for large families
The rectangular table is undoubtedly the most common shape. It is also the most practical for large families or for those who regularly host guests. Its length allows you to seat a large number of guests while optimizing space. In addition, it fits perfectly into long dining rooms or open-plan areas. Depending on how many people you want to seat, we offer tabletops ranging from 160 cm to over 300 cm for larger designs.
Round or oval table: for a more convivial atmosphere
Looking to encourage conversation and conviviality at mealtimes? A round or oval table is an excellent choice. It allows everyone to see and interact easily, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Ideal for smaller spaces or dining corners, it takes up less room while still offering good seating capacity thanks to the absence of corners. For a round table, a 100 cm diameter suits 4 people, while a 140 to 160 cm diameter is ideal for 6 to 8 people. We offer round tabletops ranging from 80 to 200 cm in our workshop.
Square table: perfect for smaller spaces
The square table is often underestimated, yet it is particularly effective for smaller spaces or more intimate dining areas. It offers a valuable space-saving solution while providing a symmetrical and balanced layout. Suitable for 2 to 12 people, our sizes range from 60 to 220 cm per side. It is ideal for small apartments or dining areas integrated into a living room.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you order a table longer than 300 cm?
Yes, it's possible to design a 3-metre table, with one or two 50 cm extensions to reach or exceed 3.40 m. Pairing two modular tables based on the layout you want is another option worth considering.
What length of table should you allow for 12 people?
A length of 300 cm is generally recommended for 12 people, but planning for a little extra is advisable for optimal comfort.
What leg height should you choose for a round table?
Standard legs measure around 70 cm for a classic dining table, or 105 cm for a standing table. An in-between height like 90 cm risks being too tall for classic chairs and too short for bar stools.
How much space should you leave around a dining table?
A minimum of 80 cm between the table and surrounding walls or furniture is recommended, to allow for sitting down and getting up easily without disrupting circulation.
Do you need a large table even if you rarely host big groups?
Not necessarily: it's often more practical to have a table suited to everyday use (4 to 6 people) with the option to add extensions for larger occasions, rather than an oversized model used year-round.

We came all the way from Paris and found our dream table with the help of Vincent. He was incredibly patient during our visit, pulled out table after table for us to explore, until we found the right one with the right legs. In the end we chose a beautiful table made of wood over 100 years old; it's a piece that oozes history and that has texture and character that you will not find if you buy "off the rack" in some overpriced designer store. The price was extremely competitive compared to what you find in stores in Paris, if you were to be able to find something like this in the first place.
Thank you
Hello,
